The EC has registered an initiative for an unconditional basic income in the Union
Brusel, 08.07.2026
The European Commission (EC) announced on Tuesday that it had registered a European Citizens' Initiative entitled "Introducing an unconditional basic income across the EU". TASR's correspondent reports. The Commission said that the organisers of the citizens' initiative believe that "with the rapid development of artificial intelligence and robotics, there is an urgent need to separate our livelihood from the ability to sell our labour, as we will soon have a situation where there will not be enough jobs for us". According to the authors of the initiative, a basic income will enable a dignified life for everyone and help create a fairer society. They argue that today there is more unpaid work (often done by women) than paid work, while even in the paid sector there are many "unnecessary jobs" that do not bring anything useful to society and have a large ecological footprint. The organisers therefore called on the European Commission to take all necessary legal steps that could help to introduce an unconditional basic income in the EU Member States and to issue a recommendation to the Member States to work towards the introduction of this type of income. Since the submitted initiative meets the formal conditions set out in the relevant legislation, the EC considers it legally admissible under the European Citizens' Initiative Regulation. The Commission clarified that it had not yet analysed the content of the proposals at this stage. The registration of a citizens' initiative does not prejudge the EC's final decision on its substance or any potential measures it may take. The Commission will only decide on the initiative if it meets the relevant criteria, including the collection of at least one million valid signatures from citizens from at least seven EU Member States. If enough signatures are collected within the 12-month period, the European Commission will be obliged to react and decide what action, if any, it will take in response to the initiative, and will have to justify its decision - positive or negative. The Commission has so far registered 132 citizens' initiatives. The content of each initiative reflects the views only of its organisers and can in no way be taken to reflect the views of the European Commission. odkaz na stránku
