| European Commission warns against reversal of Recovery Plan milestones |

| Thanks to the Recovery and Resilience Plan, Slovakia received 6.4 billion euros from the European Union (EU) to strengthen and modernize its economy. Their release is tied to the fulfillment of the national plan of milestones and targets, with the final deadline for their fulfillment falling on 31 August 2026. Final payments under the Recovery Plan must be made no later than 31 December this year. The European Commission (EC) also warns against reversing milestones and targets that have already been assessed as satisfactorily met in the past, in order to avoid suspension or reduction of payments. TASR was informed about this by Katarína Touquet Jaremová, spokeswoman for the EC Representation in Slovakia.
“The Recovery and Resilience Facility represents more than five percent of Slovakia’s GDP and is now reaching its target. All its milestones and targets must be met by this Monday. Since the approval of the Recovery Plan in 2021, the European Commission has been in close contact with Slovak partners to help them use these unique European funds as effectively as possible for meaningful reforms and investments for the benefit of this country and its people,” said Peter Stano, Head of the EC Representation in Slovakia.
Subsequently, according to him, the EC assessed the implementation of the set and agreed milestones and targets by the Slovak authorities and approved the release of payments for individual stages of the Recovery Plan. “The responsible and consistent implementation of the Recovery Plan is fully in the hands of the Slovak government and will be key for the modernisation of not only Slovakia, but also the entire European Union,” he added. Slovakia has already submitted all payment requests under the Recovery and Resilience Plan to the EC.
The Commission is currently assessing Slovakia's eighth and ninth requests for the release of outstanding payments, which will allow the country to receive the remaining €1.2 billion of the total package from Brussels. These last two requests for payment require the fulfilment of 83 milestones and targets. These include important reforms, for example in the areas of education and the environment, as well as large investment projects, for example in healthcare and digitalisation.
The funds from the Recovery Plan represent a grant for Slovakia - so it is not a loan, but money that the Slovak Republic received from Brussels sources, Touquet Jaremová clarified. According to her, these European investments have helped the country finance the construction of kindergartens, building insulation, supercomputers, the construction of two key hospitals in Martin and Banská Bystrica and a number of other projects for which the state did not have or could not allocate its national resources. odkaz na stránku |
