| The Left Party (Die Linke) won a landslide victory in Sunday's parliamentary elections in the German capital, Berlin, which holds the status of a federal state. This is according to final results released by the electoral commission overnight into Monday, as reported by the DPA news agency.
The Left Party secured 25.7 percent of the vote—an increase of 13.5 percentage points compared to the repeat election held in February 2023. The conservative Christian Democratic Union (CDU) finished second with 18.8 percent (-9.4), ahead of the right-wing populist Alternative for Germany (AfD), which received 16.3 percent (+7.2). The Greens came in third with 14.3 percent (-4.1), followed by the Social Democrats (SPD) in fourth place with 12.1 percent (-6.3).
According to projections by public broadcaster ZDF, the Left Party is set to hold 48 seats (+26) in the new 162-member parliament, while the CDU will hold 35 (-17), the AfD 30 (+13), the Greens 27 (-7), and the SPD 22 (-12).
The left-wing Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance (BSW) failed to clear the five-percent threshold required to enter the Berlin parliament (Abgeordnetenhaus), receiving 4.7 percent of the vote. The Free Democratic Party (FDP) also failed to succeed, securing only 2.5 percent of the vote; it had already missed the five-percent threshold in the 2023 election.
Voter turnout was 73.7 percent, compared to 62.9 percent in February 2023.
Berlin had previously been governed by a CDU-SPD coalition, which lost its majority. The SPD recorded its worst-ever result in a state election.
A three-party coalition comprising The Left, the Greens, and the SPD is now a possibility. The Left party announced that it would decide on whether to begin exploratory talks at its party congress on Friday. The party—then known as the Party of Democratic Socialism (PDS)—achieved its previous best result in Berlin in 2001, securing 22.6 percent of the vote.
The situation is complicated by the fact that a coalition of the CDU, the Greens, and the SPD would also be numerically possible in terms of seats. However, given its significant losses and the fact that it trails well behind The Left, observers believe the CDU can hardly claim a mandate to form the government.
Elif Eralp, a 45-year-old lawyer of Turkish descent and the lead candidate for The Left, is vying for the post of Berlin's new mayor.
The Berlin election has confirmed the crisis facing the major established parties, the CDU and the SPD. Elections also took place on Sunday in the federal state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, where the CDU failed to win a seat in the state parliament for the first time. This debacle for the conservatives followed just two weeks after the AfD's massive success in Saxony-Anhalt.
