| What do Europeans consider important for the future of the EU? |

| As many as 95 percent of European Union (EU) citizens consider agriculture and rural areas important for Europe's future, and 93 percent state that ensuring a stable food supply for the Union is crucial. This is according to the latest Eurobarometer survey highlighted by the European Commission on Tuesday, a TASR correspondent reports.
The results of the survey—titled "Europeans, Agriculture and the Common Agricultural Policy"—conducted among 26,456 respondents across all 27 EU member states between May and June 2026, indicated that the recognition of agriculture's strategic importance goes hand in hand with broad support for the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP). According to 70 percent of Europeans, this policy benefits everyone in the Union.
Respondents acknowledged the CAP's successes in ensuring a stable food supply in the EU under all circumstances (93%), securing reasonable food prices and sustainable natural resource management (92%), and strengthening the role of farmers in the food supply chain (91%). Approximately 85% of those surveyed consider increasing the competitiveness of agriculture to be an important priority of this policy.
The majority of respondents appreciate that food security has increased or remained stable over the past decade, and over 90% acknowledge the impact of extreme weather on food security and food supplies. When asked about the importance of EU origin when buying food, nearly 80% of Europeans stated that it is an important factor.
Almost 90% indicate that their purchasing decisions are also influenced by whether production complies with stricter environmental and animal welfare standards and whether the goods bear quality labels.
Regarding EU trade policy, Europeans view trade agreements positively because they ensure the diversification of markets and supplies of agri-food products within the Union, boost exports of European agri-food products, and promote EU labor and environmental standards—including animal welfare—for agricultural production in other countries.
Ensuring safe, healthy, and sustainable high-quality food is considered the main objective of EU policy on agriculture and rural development. More than half of Europeans identify ensuring reasonable food prices for consumers (55%) and securing a fair standard of living for farmers (53%) as key future priorities.
Other priorities include ensuring stable food supplies in the EU (50%), protecting the environment and addressing climate change (47%), ensuring sustainable food production methods (46%), and generating growth and jobs in rural areas (45%).
The European Commission's proposal regarding the future Common Agricultural Policy also addresses these issues. Among other things, it proposes a minimum amount for farmer income support to be allocated within the national and regional partnership funds, ensuring that farmers continue to have guaranteed predictability and stability regarding support under the Common Agricultural Policy from the EU budget.
