The European Commission aims to accelerate the development of standards and improve competitiveness.
EU, 07.10.2026
On Tuesday, the European Commission (EC) proposed modernizing the European standardization system to accelerate processes, ensure greater representation for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), and better support the EU's strategic interests, thereby boosting the EU's competitiveness. A TASR correspondent reports. The Commission noted that standards are essential for the functioning of the EU economy; they ensure safety and interoperability, provide legal certainty, and facilitate market access across sectors ranging from clean technologies and batteries to construction products, cybersecurity, and advanced manufacturing. Harmonized European standards help businesses demonstrate compliance with EU legislation, reduce costs, and enhance quality and consumer confidence. However, the current standardization system faces challenges in keeping pace with innovation and technological developments, which require the timely development of standards. The Commission has proposed a revision of existing legislation. The proposal introduces clearer deadlines for developing standards requested by the Commission and clarifies the use of "common specifications" as a targeted fallback measure. The proposal also addresses the potential for greater use of external technical specifications, which would help innovative solutions reach the market faster while full standards are being developed. The Commission estimates that its package of measures would reduce the average time required to develop a standard from six years to four, thereby enhancing the Union's ability to shape global standardization and simplifying business access to the Single Market. The Commission's proposal introduces provisions strengthening the obligations of European and national standardization organizations to ensure the effective participation and representation of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), civil society, academia, and public authorities in the standardization process. EU standards play a key role when products are placed on the market, making them more likely to be adopted globally. Given this geopolitical significance, the Commission's proposal also fosters stronger Union coordination in international standardization, helping to promote European interests while remaining consistent with World Trade Organization (WTO) principles. The Commission has also proposed establishing an excellence hub for European standardization to ensure stronger strategic governance, improved policy coordination, and closer alignment of standardization work with EU priorities. The proposed measures will now be examined by the European Parliament and the Council of the EU before their adoption and entry into force. odkaz na stránku
