EU institutions have agreed on rules for organic farming
EU, 22.10.2026
The European Commission (EC) has welcomed an agreement reached on Wednesday between the European Parliament and the Council of the EU (representing member states) regarding amendments to rules on the production, labeling, and certification of organic agricultural products, as well as trade with non-EU countries. This was reported by a TASR correspondent. The Commission noted that the revised rules will help consumers make more informed choices regarding imported organic products. The agreement also introduces targeted changes to production and certification rules, thereby simplifying and improving the framework for organic agricultural operators. These changes are expected to encourage investment, create job opportunities within the organic farming sector, and further promote agricultural practices that adhere to high environmental standards. The co-legislators—the European Parliament and the Council of the EU—have agreed on a revised EU framework for organic production and labeling. This framework will allow organic products imported from non-EU countries with equivalent systems to use the EU organic logo, provided they also meet additional EU requirements regarding production and control. The new framework extends the current recognition of 11 non-EU countries under the equivalence regime until December 31, 2036. This ensures that the import and export of organic products will not be disrupted during ongoing trade agreement negotiations. The agreement also adapts and streamlines certification eligibility conditions for small-scale retailers, groups of operators, and their members. It further adjusts specific rules for animal and plant production—covering areas such as poultry, feed, conversion periods, and veterinary treatments—as well as soil fertility management in greenhouses. This regulation shall enter into force on the day following its publication in the Official Journal of the EU. The Commission noted that organic farming is a key component of the Common Agricultural Policy, with organically farmed land accounting for 11% of the EU’s agricultural area. The Union establishes rules and regulations governing the production, distribution, and placing of organic products on its market. The latest EU framework for organic production and labeling has been in effect since January 2022. odkaz na stránku
