The Czech government has approved a proposal to enshrine the Czech koruna in the constitution.
Prag, 27.10.2026
On Monday, the Czech government approved a proposal to enshrine the Czech koruna in the Constitution, based on a draft submitted by coalition lawmakers from the SPD movement and the 'Motorists for Themselves' (Motoristi sebe) party. This was announced at a press conference by Czech Finance Minister Alena Schillerová and Foreign Minister Petr Macinka. However, the coalition lacks the constitutional majority required to pass the proposal; it would also need the support of opposition lawmakers, reports the TASR correspondent in Prague. According to Schillerová, this represents a strong political gesture. "We want to clearly declare that the Czech koruna is a priority for us. As long as this government is in power, it will neither propose nor seek to join the Eurozone—that is, to adopt the euro—because we do not want it," she noted. The proposal would add Article 98 to the Czech Constitution, stating: "The currency of the Czech Republic is the Czech koruna." The draft was authored by 'Motorists' lawmakers Petr Macinka, Boris Šťastný, and Filip Turek, along with Tomio Okamura of the SPD. According to Macinka, the Czech koruna is the key to the Czech Republic's economic sovereignty. He noted that the country's entry into the Eurozone would impact Czech society as a whole across many areas. Therefore, he argued, if such a change were to take place, it should only happen with a very strong mandate—that is, with the consent of the overwhelming majority of Czech society. "If one day—and I hope I don't live to see it—the entire society reaches a consensus (...), then such a change should be brought about by a constitutional majority. We are not taking this step to declare that we are permanently ruling out the adoption of the euro in the Czech Republic; rather, we want to establish the conditions and the possibility—should the Czech koruna ever be abolished—for such a change to require a constitutional majority," said Macinka. Among all the ministries, only the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Culture, and the Ministry of the Environment—all headed by representatives from the 'Motorists' party—expressed support for the proposal. The other ministries either offered a neutral stance or provided no comment. The Czech National Bank also issued a neutral position. The Confederation of Industry of the Czech Republic (SP ČR) also submitted comments, expressing fundamental opposition to the proposal to constitutionally enshrine the Czech koruna. Instead, it urged the adoption of the common European currency, noting that the Czech Republic committed to this upon joining the EU. "With a view to strengthening legal certainty for economic entities, maintaining the Czech Republic's high level of international credibility, and bolstering its capacity to fulfill its commitments, the Confederation views the adoption of the euro as a step that would contribute to the stability and predictability of the economic environment," the SP ČR explained. odkaz na stránku
