| Šimoňák: Slovakia will continue to purchase gas and nuclear fuel from Russia |
| Bratislava, 28.10.2026 |
 |
| "We respect all restrictions arising from EU law. That is the current legal situation. As long as there is a legal possibility to purchase Russian gas, we will be happy to continue doing so. As for the future, that is a subject of ongoing discussions. We are striving to defend these interests of ours, including within the EU," Šimoňák stated.
Slovakia, which operates the Bohunice and Mochovce nuclear power plants—built during the Soviet era—"plans to continue purchasing" nuclear fuel from Russia, the State Secretary added. "Our existing partnerships are long-term in nature and, in my view, are being reliably fulfilled. Nuclear fuel is not subject to sanctions—neither current ones nor those being planned. Therefore, we intend to continue this cooperation," Šimoňák added.
"As you know, the Slovak government holds the view that the conflict in Ukraine has no military solution. We would prefer a swift and peaceful resolution to the conflict in Ukraine over an escalation of sanctions, which would only diminish the possibilities for cooperation," the State Secretary concluded.
